At Bariatrics and Beyond, we are honoured to share the inspiring journey of our patient, Bex, who has transformed her life through weight loss surgery. Her story is one of courage, determination, and a commitment to improving her health and wellbeing. In this blog post, Bex shares her experiences, challenges, and successes in the hope that it will inspire others who may be considering bariatric surgery.

A Catalyst for Change: A Moment at Disney

For Bex, the decision to undergo weight loss surgery was not something that had been planned for years. It came as a result of a powerful moment during a trip to Disney. “It was quite a quick decision,” Bex explains. “I was struggling with the heat, and I felt grim. I’m not a planner, I’m a doer. I was sick of yo-yo dieting, and I was getting bigger and bigger. Disney was my catalyst for enough.”

When she returned home from her holiday, Bex knew she had to make a change. After researching various options, she found Dr. Tuna Bilecik and immediately felt confident in her decision. “I got home, I researched hard and found Dr Tuna, and the rest was history.”

Overcoming Medical Barriers

Bex’s journey was unique in that she has a rare medical condition, one that many in the UK would not treat. “In the UK, they wouldn’t touch me with a barge pole,” Bex says. “They didn’t understand my condition, and just said no. But Dr. Tuna did his research, and after learning more, he was happy to take me on.”

This willingness to listen and thoroughly research Bex’s medical history was a crucial factor in her success. Dr. Tuna’s approach gave Bex the confidence that this surgery could work for her, despite her condition.

Setting Goals and Achieving Them

Bex’s main goal was to achieve a normal BMI so that weight would no longer be an excuse for her condition when seeing doctors. “I wanted to get my BMI normal so doctors wouldn’t use weight as an excuse for my condition. I wanted to be taken more seriously,” she shares. “And it’s happened! Since having the surgery, whenever I’ve gone to a doctor or consultant, they’ve never complained about my weight or used it as an excuse.”

Achieving this goal was a huge milestone for Bex, and it allowed her to feel more in control of her health and her body.

The Weight Loss Journey: 7 Stone Lost and Feeling Better

Since her surgery, Bex has lost an incredible 7 stone. While she has put on 5lb recently, she feels it’s actually been for the better. “I feel better for it. I felt a bit too gaunt before, and now I feel more content and confident,” she says. “I’ve kept my weight off for over a year now, and I’m so happy with how I feel.”

Looking forward, Bex has her sights set on a tummy tuck to complete her transformation. “I’d like a tummy tuck now to just finish off that piece in the puzzle for me!”

A New Relationship with Food

One of the most profound changes Bex has experienced is her relationship with food. “Mentally, I feel better. I’m less sluggish, and my life doesn’t revolve around food anymore,” she shares. “I eat to keep going and to look after myself, where I’d never have done that before. I meal plan, prioritise protein, and stick to my tapas plate. It’s that simple for me now.”

This shift in mindset has been key to her long-term success. Instead of focusing on food as a source of comfort, Bex now views it as fuel to support her health and energy.

A New Lease on Life

The benefits of weight loss surgery have had a profound effect on Bex’s lifestyle. “I walk daily, I have a dog, so she’s a good excuse to get out,” she says. “I don’t look and feel a sweaty mess on holidays anymore. I don’t hide behind the kids in photos. I have more energy to play with my children, and I’m teaching them good, healthy relationships with food. I’m more of a role model for it now, and I was a bit of a food hypocrite before!”

These changes have brought Bex closer to her family, allowing her to be more active and engaged in the moments that matter most.

The Most Rewarding Part: Maintaining Progress

For Bex, the most rewarding aspect of her journey has been maintaining her weight loss. “The most rewarding part is keeping it off,” she says. “Being that yo-yo dieter would really upset me. Now, seeing the scales stay the same and my clothes stay the same size—it’s the best reward!”

It’s clear that for Bex, the emotional and psychological transformation has been just as important as the physical changes.

Advice for Others Considering Bariatric Surgery

Bex offers some valuable advice for anyone considering weight loss surgery: “It’s a tool. It’s not a quick fix or an easy way to lose weight. It’s a journey. The hard work starts once that operation is done—to use that tool wisely, be sensible, and learn to have a better relationship with food.”

Her advice reflects the reality that bariatric surgery is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to health and wellbeing.

A Heartfelt Recommendation for Dr. Tuna

Bex has not only been a passionate advocate for bariatric surgery but also for Dr. Tuna himself. “I’ve recommended Dr. Tuna to many of my followers because he is so good at what he does,” she shares. “You are looked after, and the aftercare is phenomenal. My rep, Anna, has done a wonderful job looking after me. No question was too daft. My results speak for themselves. This journey is not a quick fix, but with the best team, it’s been a heck of a lot easier!”

Bex’s journey is a perfect example of the transformative impact bariatric surgery can have when coupled with the right team and mindset. With Dr. Tuna’s expertise and support, Bex has not only achieved her weight loss goals but has also gained confidence, energy, and a renewed zest for life.
